Public Awareness Overview
VSA Vermont is a leader statewide in illuminating the talents and creative power of people with disabilities. Through performances, exhibitions, workshops, publication and the ongoing personal commitment of staff, instructors and board members, VSA Vermont promotes full inclusion through joyful and confident self-expression.
Disability statistics: Young children with disabilities are estimated to be 9.1 percent of the Vermont population, compared with a national average of 7.8%. In 2005, about 2,000 children were being served by the Vermont Families, Infants and Toddlers and Early Essential Education programs. The total number of Vermont children with special health care needs based on claims data is estimated at over 39,000. An estimated 16.6% of the general Vermont population, aged 5 and older, or around 95,000 people, has a disability.
