The Guinness Worlds Records LTD has awarded VSA Arts of Vermont a
certificate of achievement
for setting a new Worlds Record for the
"Largest Paint-by-Numbers Painting." The record-setting
2,048-square-foot reproduction of Sabra Field's original artwork,
Burlington from Lake Champlain, was created at the first annual VSA
Arts Paintathon on July 20, 2003. The Paintathon took place at the
Main Street Landing Surface Lot, near Burlington's Waterfront Park,
and raised over $21,000 for VSA Arts of Vermont's free arts programs
across the state, designed for low-income and disabled Vermonters.
Portions of this unique artwork are on permanent display at City
Market/Onion River Coop in downtown Burlington.
VSA Arts of Vermont's Paintathon is this non-profit's version of the
classic walkathon; participants became "Pledge-Painters", soliciting
friends, family and neighbors for donations to sponsor their
participation. The day of the event, fundraising participants helped
paint, assemble and hang this remarkable artwork. The 32x64-foot
artwork was painted on 64 8x4-foot sheets of corrugated plastic and
used 21 gallons of paint. It took more than 250 people and
approximately three hours to complete the painting, which was
displayed on the back of the Waterfront Video building at its
completion.
