A boy holds a drum while sitting on his mother's lap at BOOM VT 2013.

In this photograph of a seated audience at BOOM VT 2013, a young boy and his mother watch the unseen action on stage. The boy, sitting on his mother’s lap, seems to have forgotten the drum and drumstick he holds while his mother’s arms encircle him. Others in the audience likewise seem absorbed in the action on stage.

Workshop Descriptions

Taiko Demonstration: Stuart Paton

If you’ve never seen a performance of Burlington Taiko, prepare to be amazed by the precision and showmanship. Since 1987, Burlington Taiko has been mesmerizing audiences with its powerful, spellbinding, and propulsive sounds. Over half a million people have been introduced to the power of Burlington Taiko via public performances. Stuart Paton, founder and artistic director of Burlington Taiko, is a popular VSA Vermont teaching-artist and has been involved in BOOM VT as a volunteer, consultant, and drumming instructor. Stuart, who grew up in Japan, began his formal study of Taiko in 1984 during a summer apprenticeship with Grandmaster Tanaka. We’re delighted to have Stuart Paton again this year for a Taiko demonstration in the Main Room at 1:00.

Conga Drumming: Bruce McKenzie

Back by popular demand, join Bruce McKenzie at 1:35 in the Children’s Library for a Conga Drumming workshop.  Come and learn the various hand shapes and sounds of a conga drum.  This workshop will feature three different sized instruments.   Learn about repetition and melody  as you experiment individually and as part of a group.  No prior experience is necessary.

Comfort Sound Drumming

Come explore sound and rhythm in this hands-on workshop.  Teaching artists Morgan Lamphere and Jesse Rosenfield will engage participants in a variety of exercises using VSA VT’s Comfort Sound drums. Join the beat!

Drop-In Drum Instruction

Drop in for drumming instruction with the bucket drum you’ve just made. We’ll have a teaching artist facilitating rhythms and instruction in the same room where people make their instruments. If interested, you can also join a bucket drum group that will participate in the final jam session!

Drumming Meditation: Andrea O’Connor

A guided mindfulness session of relaxed, focused attention.  First, settle in. Then allow the sounds of drumming to stimulate pictures or movies in your mind. Then shift your attention to relaxation in your body as the drumming and verbal guidance leads you to physical feelings or emotions.
